Makes units and weapons better. You can buy parts for your rocket launches that make themselves better, cause more damage, and allow you utilize stronger rockets. Also, enlist marines to aid you and set upward auto-fire to make your attacks more potent.
Deal with stronger demon threats. When you get far enough, you'll face bosses or portals that are better than before. These will test how strong your upgraded weapons are. If you fail a stage, just try again with improvements that are stronger.
