To get wood from a tree, click and hold its blocks. Get some wood blocks.
To get to your inventory, press E. Then, drag a wooden block to a 2x2 making grid tile. This gets you four wooden blocks stacked. Bring them back into your inventory by dragging them.
Press the space bar and drag the stack of wooden planks to a different inventory spot to separate them into separate pieces. Set up the four single wooden planks in the above 2x2 making grid to make a 3x3 crafting table. You can now make bigger and better tools with the right recipes.
