Zombies can come at you from any angle. When they get close, they will quickly drain your character's life. So, finish them as fast as you can, but be clever about while to reload. When zombies are closing in for the massacre, running out of ammo can let them get to you swiftly.
You have to go to different parts of the city to defend them or finish important tasks. There are tougher tasks as you go along. Zombies growth stronger and attack you in larger bunches. To survive longer, upgrade your weapons and ammunition, and use dressings to heal you when attacked.
As you finish tasks and unlock new weapons that give you more power, you move up in rank. Also, use the prizes you earn to improve your weapons and ammunition. It can be hard to beat Venom zombies and other harder zombies without them.
